CALCIUM — Bones, Muscle Contraction

CALCIUM creates bone mass and strength, participates in blood coagulation, enhances muscle contractility (skeletal and cardiac), helps regulate smooth muscle contraction (blood vessels) and the secretion of hormones, such as insulin, as well as supports the optimal functioning of numerous enzymes and proteins.

Low calcium intake may result in osteoporosis, and interfere with wound healing and blood coagulation (longer bleeding times).  Optimal calcium levels, on the other hand, support a healthy heart and blood vessels, provide some protection from lead toxicity in children, and may reduce the incidence of colorectal cancer.
